Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil: How Intervals Differ

Two cars in the same driveway can be due for an oil change on very different schedules, and it is not because one owner is more careful than the other. One runs full synthetic oil rated for a long interval; the other runs a conventional or synthetic-blend oil that needs changing much sooner. Motor oil breaks down under heat, and how fast it breaks down depends on the oil type. Is it a problem to top up with a different type of oil than what is already in the engine?

A one-time top-up mixing conventional and synthetic oil is generally not a problem for the engine; the oils are compatible with each other.
